The all-volunteer organizers of the fourth annual Oysters & Ale fund-raiser

will decide on June 7th which Humboldt County non-profit will be the beneficiary of the

2009 event. Each year, Oysters & Ale benefits a different Humboldt County organization.

Oysters & Ale was first organized in 2006 by Debi Farber Bush, Kitty Yancheff and

Barbara Groom (collectively known as A Major Production) to benefit St. Bernard’s High

School. The second O&A was held at Woodley Island and successfully raised sufficient

funds to provide free Wi-fi at the Humboldt County Library.

Last year’s proceeds benefited The Humboldt Botanical Gardens Foundation. The event

featured “celebrity tapsters” including the entire Humboldt County Board of Supervisors,

and other local luminary servers, and oyster shuckers. They served the entire line of Lost

Coast Beers, including special festival beer, wine, locally harvested oysters and organic

sausages. An auction was conducted by the inimitable Rex Bohn, and attendees danced to

the music of NightHawk. It attracted a crowd of over 800 to Woodley Island.

This year’s event will feature more barbeques and will again take place under the big tent

at Woodly Island Marina on Saturday, September 12th 2009.

Non profits should submit an informal letter stating what their organization does and what

the funds will be used for (funds cannot be used for salary). Letters should be postmarked

by May 18th:

Lost Coast Brewery

attention: Oysters and Ale

123 West Third Street Eureka, CA 95501

Non-profits must be able to solicit a minimum of 12 large live-auction items

Non-profits must benefit all of Humboldt County

Non-profits must be able to provide 20 volunteers to the event

The Major Production team of volunteers will review applications and vote on this year’s

recipient by June 7th. For more information call Debi Farber Bush at 707.845.3873 or

Evelyn Giddings and Debi Farber look over the damage caused by the storm.

Oysters and Ale has been postponed until next Friday. The tents are leaking and the storm is suppose to get worse. The Weather Service told us that the storm is gaining strength off shore and should be really bad this evening. The Party Place is afraid the tents might blow down and no one wants to take that chance.

We’ll see you next Friday.

Hannah and Rick get ready to make the secret sauce.

There was an in-house taste off at Eureka Natural Foods to find the best sauces for the oysters at Oysters and Ale. The winners were:

  • Pomegranate Cranberry Chipotle Sauce
  • Raspberry Cocoa Tarragon Sauce
  • Butter Lemon Garlic
  • Sweet Chili Plum Sauce with Wasabi

Don’t worry, if you don’t like oysters you can always put the sauces on your sausage.
